GOP demands info on why Benghazi suspects not part of rewards program

After waiting a month for a response that never came, two House Republicans have now officially requested documents from the U.S. State Department to determine why no suspects identified in the Benghazi terrorist attack were ever part of the “Rewards for Justice” program.

According to Fox News, U.S. Reps. Frank Wolf and Michael T. McCaul sent a letter last week to the department stating that since they have yet to receive an answer to their previous letter to Sec. of State John Kerry, they are now using the Freedom of Information Act to request copies of “any and all State Department records including meeting records, memoranda, emails, or other documents — pertaining to the use of the Rewards for Justice Program as a means of obtaining information leading to the capture of anyone involved in or responsible for the September 11, 2012 attack in Benghazi which resulted in the death of four Americans, including Ambassador Chris Stevens.”

The congressmen and 84 of their House colleagues penned a letter to Kerry last month seeking answers about why “one of the most valuable assets the U.S. government has in the fight against international terrorism – the Rewards for Justice program – is not being used” in the search for suspects in last year’s terrorist attack.

Now, House Republicans will take it upon themselves to investigate “whether the administration even considered including Benghazi attack suspects as part” of the rewards program, Fox News reported.

According to the article:

Last month, State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf cited “classified deliberations” as the reason the State Department could not publicly explain who was on the list. Asked whether the Benghazi suspects were considered, Harf did not cite classification issues but has not followed through on a pledge to get back to reporters on that question.

“Whether we pay a couple million dollars isn’t the point — the point is we believe it’s a priority … and whether they are on a website or not doesn’t change that,” she said.
