Will Spike Lee do the right thing?
That’s what a Sanford, Fla., couple wants to know in a lawsuit against the bombastic black-power movie director for dragging them into the Trayvon Martin-George Zimmerman madness by retweeting their home address thinking it was Zimmerman’s.
ABC News reported Monday that David and Elaine McCain’s lawsuit accuses Lee of negligence and encouraging a dangerous mob mentality among his Twitter follower.
According to the suit, on March 23, 2012, Lee re-tweeted a post from a California man that mistakenly listed the McCain’s address as Zimmerman’s. At the time, the black radical group New Black Panther Party had put out a $10,000 bounty for Zimmerman’s capture “dead or alive.”
That’s a little more attention than an elderly couple living in Central Florida needs in their Golden Years. On March 29, 2012, they settled with Lee by accepting a $10,000 payment and an apology, according to The Smoking Gun, which posted a copy of the couple’s lawsuit.
But as the saying goes, “twitter is forever.”
During Zimmerman’s trial, the couple’s address resurfaced on Twitter according to the lawsuit, along with threatening messages such as “Let the PURGE begin,” “I NEED ALL THE WOLVES TO MEET ME HERE” and “Since Yall Gone Kill Him And Whatnot,” and “HERE GO HIS ADDRESS. LET THE HUNGER GAMES BEGIN.”
The lawsuit seeks damages for having to temporarily move out of the house in fear, mental anguish and distress and loss of the value of their property. The lawsuit seeks more than $15,000 in damages – a legally arbitrary figure – but The Smoking Gun reports a filing by Lee’s attorney indicates the case could be worth $1.7 million.
