Las Vegas debuts street lights that can record pedestrians’ conversations

What happens in Vegas may not stay in Vegas, now that new government-funded street lights have the capacity to take audio and video recordings of passersby.

The wireless, computer-operated LED lights can “play music, interact with pedestrians and are equipped with video screens, which can display police alerts, weather alerts and traffic information,” according to the Daily Mail.

The new lighting may cut down on operating expenses for the city, but it has created privacy concerns for Las Vegas residents, according to KSNV News 3.

“This technology, you know is taking us to a place where, you know, you’ll essentially be monitored from the moment you leave your home ‘tll the moment you get home,” civil rights activist Daphne Lee told News 3.

After the fallout from revelations that the National Security Agency has been recording cellphone conversations and emails, Lee said she’s worried that freedoms are disappearing.

“At what point do we say, ‘This is the land of the free?’” Lee askled. “People have a right to a reasonable amount of privacy.”

Processors in the Intellistreets lights store and analyze data, soundtracks, announcements, commercials and are intended to provide a more interactive experience for pedestrians. Las Vegas public works Director, Jorge Servantes, told News 3 there are no plans in the immediate future for recording passersby.

“Right now our intention is not to have any cameras or recording devices,” Servantes said. “It’s just to provide output out there, not to get any feed or video feed coming back.”
