Furious Senator accuses USDA of planning to allow chicken from China

U.S. Sen. Chuck Schumer is still having a fit – and who can blame him – over reports that the U.S. Department of Agriculture is prepared to start allowing chicken “raised and processed in China” to be sold in America.

Speaking from outside Associated Supermarket on Sunday, the senator blasted the USDA, who reportedly “secretly” revealed this move to Congress, for even considering allowing a country with such a deplorable food safety record to raise, slaughter and process chicken to be sold for consumption in America.

According to the video published by the New York Daily News, Schumer described, in nauseating detail, the following:

There are so many disturbing incidents about food that comes from China.  Arsenic in calamari and rice, maggots in pasta, glass chips in pumpkin seeds. In 2008, Chinese milk products with melamine resulted in six infants dying.

China has a terrible record when it comes to food safety, and because of cutbacks, our U.S. Department of Agriculture does not do the inspections that are needed and necessary.

Within a year, Schumer continued, chicken raised in China could be sold in the U.S.

“So we’re asking the USDA to reexamine all of the rules it’s promulgating about chicken either raised or processed in China and sent here,” he said. “Particularly when there are no inspections. Particularly when there’s no labeling that’s going to say where the chickens come from.”

“Schumer said a USDA report to Congress indicated aspects of the Chinese slaughter system to be equivalent to the U.S.,” Jim Smith from WCBS 880 also reported Sunday.

However, the USDA “categorically” denied the “Chinese poultry slaughter system is equivalent to that of the U.S.”

“USDA has not found China’s poultry slaughter system to be equivalent and therefore poultry slaughtered in China is not allowed to be imported to the United States,” the agency said in a statement to CBS New York. “The U.S. food supply is among the safest in the world, and the Food Safety and Inspection Service is dedicated to maintaining that status.”
