Jay Leno’s tough but fair interview brings out best in Ted Cruz

The normally affable “The Tonight Show” host Jay Leno got a bit confrontational Friday night with tough, but, in my opinion, fair questioning of U.S. Sen.Ted Cruz, R-Tex. This caused a lot of folks on Twitter to wonder what was going on.

“I’ve been reading a lot about you lately, and they describe you as aggressive, arrogant and abrasive. Accurate?” Leno began.

“I don’t know that you can believe everything you read,” Cruz jokingly countered. “You know, what I’m trying to do is do my job. And occasionally, people don’t like that.”

Here’s the opening segment from NBC:

Leno then asked the unquestionably conservative Cruz for his thoughts on gay marriage. After replying, he turned it into a 10th Amendment issue.

“I support marriage between one man and one woman,” Cruz said. “But I also think it’s a question for the states. Some states have made decisions one way on gay marriage. Some states have made decisions the other way. And that’s the great thing about our Constitution, is different states can make different decisions depending on the values of their citizens.”

Although a lot of tweeps took issue with Leno’s questioning, conservative talk radio host Dana Loesch felt otherwise:

Leno asked Cruz, who many felt was the cause of the recent federal government shutdown, about the potential for a similar event in the next few months.

“Are we going to have another shutdown in February?” asked Leno. “Are we going to do this again?”

“I certainly hope not,” Cruz replied. He then put the blame for the previous shutdown where it should rightfully be — with a president the refused to negotiate with Congress.

Leosch gave her seal of approval to Cruz’s appearance:
