Two British teens raised the bar of bad taste and caused an uproar on both sides of the Atlantic when they attended a Halloween party last week dressed as the twin towers burning on 9/11.
University of Chester students Amber Langford and Annie Collinge, both 19, decorated their costumes with flames, smoke, planes and people jumping out of the upper floors, according to ABC News. In a bow to American pride, each wore headgear with a U.S. flag.
Rosie’s nightclub in the United Kingdom town Chester sponsored the costume party and gave Langford and Collinge the “best dressed” award, bringing them about $240 in shopping vouchers.
“Both the University of Chester and Chester Students’ Union utterly condemn the appalling photos which have been shared on social media,” the organizations said in a joint statement, according to ABC. “Both organizations have begun an urgent investigation into the circumstances around which these images have been taken with a view to taking the necessary action.”
The girls claimed it was all meant in good fun.
“We never meant to be offensive, but we apologize if any offense was caused. The idea was to depict a serious, modern-day horror that happened in our lifetime and was not intended as a joke.”
They’re dressed in costumes adorned with people leaping to their deaths out of burning buildings, and they never meant to be offensive?
“Although their behavior is insensitive, I think it really reflects the important task that we have to educate future generations,” said Mary Fetchet, founding director of Voices of September 11th, according to ABC. “Not focusing on the horror of the day, but about the wonderful lives of those victims who died.”
Party-goers on this side of the pond are warned by the PC police that it’s offensive to dress in Japanese kimonos or Mexican sombreros at costume parties. I wonder what they’d think of these girls’ getup.
I also wonder who demonstrated the worst taste — the two teens or the person who awarded them first place.
