Alex Sink’s Democratic opponent drops out of congressional race

Former Chief Financial Officer and failed Democratic candidate for governor Alex Sink has one less thing to worry about in her bid to replace the late Republican U.S. Rep. Bill Young in the 13th Congressional District.

Democrat Jessica Ehrlich, who announced her candidacy for the seat before Young’s death in September, issued a statement Wednesday saying she is suspending her campaign, according to a Politico report.

Sink became the instant frontrunner for the seat when she announced her candidacy last week, drawing support from Democrats nationally, including the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and Emily’s List, the group dedicated to electing pro-abortion Democratic women to Congress and governors’ mansions.

“This morning, I am officially announcing that I am suspending my campaign for Congress. I want to thank my amazing staff, donors and volunteers for everything they have done for our campaign,” Ehrlich said, according to Politico.

“In particular, I would like to thank the hardworking men and women of the labor movement who have supported my fight for Florida’s middle-class families. I also want to thank the voters of Florida’s 13th Congressional District for their continued support. While this is not the result I was hoping for, I remain committed to helping the families of Pinellas County, this state, and this country.”

The primary to select candidates to fill Young’s seat is scheduled for Jan. 14, with a special general election scheduled for March 11.
