In the wake of reports that First Lady Michelle Obama’s classmate at Princeton earned the no-bid contract to build the failed Obamacare website, we learn of another no-bid deal going to a marketing firm with close ties to President Barack Obama.
According to documents obtained by Judicial Watch, Shepardson, Stern & Kaminsky was the recipient of a plum no-bid contract for $100,000 to design the “Let’s Move” logo for Mrs. Obama’s childhood obesity campaign.
An arrangement that violates federal contracting rules and is acknowledged by federal officials as an “unauthorized commitment,” the documents show.
Judicial Watch reported that the U.S. Department of Agriculture “illegally awarded the contract,” and then prepared a “request for ratification of an unauthorized commitment” to legitimize the expenditure.
The marketing firm in question was the official agency for Obama for America’s youth initiatives in both 2008 and 2012, according to Judicial Watch. A partner of the firm worked on Obama’s political campaigns, as did a former member.
Furthermore, the USDA official who inappropriately authorized the deal looks to be a political appointee.
David Lazarus is named in the documents as having approved the deal. He is a former senior adviser to Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack, who was a deputy director for Obama for America and worked on the Obama-Biden transition team, Judical Watch reported.
As usual, there has been little accountability from the Obama administration in the case.
