Reporter to Carney: ‘Your mocking is entertaining,’ but how about the truth?

White House press secretary Jay Carney is finding afternoon briefings more contentious as problems grow with the Obamacare website.

Carney faced a barrage of questions from ABC News correspondent Jonathan Karl over President Obama’s suggestion in October that people could “bypass the website and apply by phone or in person.” Karl said signing up over the phone or by mail is just as difficult as enrolling online, referred to memos released by the Government Reform Committee as proof.

“Did the president know that the very same problems would be facing consumers when they called on the phone when he said they could apply in 25 minutes?” Karl asked.

Carney said the phone tie-ups weren’t a “dramatic revelation,” but they were a known fact at the time, and the administration never pretended otherwise.

“Jon, I get it!” Carney said mocking Karl’s tone. “But the person who calls isn’t the one who continues to wait after the paper application is filled, right?”

Karl was not amused.

“Your mocking is entertaining, but the president said you could apply within 25 minutes,” Karl said. “That was not true.”

While Carney admitted that someone could call, give their information and have their questions answered, that information must still be processed through HealthCare.gov.
