Power grab: Obama executive order creates climate task force

President Obama has appointed a task force largely composed of liberal Democrats like California Gov. Jerry Brown to sidestep Congress on environmental regulations – in an effort to do through executive orders what he can’t get done through legislative channels.

The Task Force on Climate Preparedness and Resilience is meant to complement a plan Obama announced in June to use executive orders to implement policies to reduce carbon emissions by energy producers, according to Fox News.

obamaclimate1103The panel is supposed to “advise the administration on how to respond to severe storms, wildfires, droughts and other potential impacts of climate change,” Fox reported.

And it just might. But given its makeup, it’s more likely to advise the administration on how to respond to union demands of public funds and environmentalists’ demands on local regulations.

Besides Brown, the task force includes Govs. Jay Inslee of Washington, Neil Abercrombie of Hawaii, Jack Markell of Delaware,  Martin O’Malley of Maryland, Peter Shumlin of Verman and Pat Quinn of Illinois — Democrats all.

It also includes Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter and Houston Mayor Annise Parker. Again, all three are Democrats.

The panel really is bipartisan, though. Three of its 17 members are Republicans, including Eddie Calvo, governor of the territory of Guam. (What, American Samoa wasn’t available?)

According to Fox, the task force will “will look at federal money spent on roads, bridges, flood control and other projects. It ultimately will recommend how structures can be made more resilient to the effects of climate change, such as rising sea levels and warming temperatures.”

Considering it’s made up of seven Democratic governors – notoriously in cahoots with unions – and Democratic mayors like Nutter, who are even more union-dependent than governors, it’s much more likely the task force will recommend how projects can be developed at greater expense to the public for little practical gain. The panel is also likely to act with little regard for actual results, other than growing union payrolls and their political donations to Democratic governors and mayors

And considering the voice it will have in federal funding for rebuilding efforts, the whole thing amounts to a power grab by the Obama White House to use administrative authority to push unpopular policies. (Does that sound familiar at all?) The task force is the byproduct of a study on efforts to streamline federal and state responses to emergencies and subsequent rebuilding efforts

“The devil is in the details,” a former senior government official told Fox News. “Who gets to decide what sustainability is? Or what its outcome means?”

From now on, the answer is simple: Jerry Brown.

And the governor of Guam.
