New info reveals former Guantanamo Bay detainee in Benghazi during attack

Fox News has learned that a Guantanamo Bay detainee released to Libya in 2007 was in Benghazi the night of the deadly terrorist attack on Sept. 11.

Chief Intelligence Correspondent Catherine Herridge said that a source “on the ground in Libya” confirmed to Fox News that former detainee Sufian bin Qumu, who was sent to Guantanamo Bay in 2002, released to Libyan custody in 2007, then subsequently set free, was in Benghazi the night of the attack – a “claim” not disputed by “two sources familiar with the investigation.”

Herridge’s revealed that Ambassador Chris Stevens was “interested in bin Qumu’s fate once he was transferred from the U.S. military detention facility to Libya” and that he had one of his subordinates meet with bin Qumu at the Libyan jail,” where he was originally held.

Bin Qumu’s review file from Guantanomo is telling. It said he is a “former member of the Libyan Islamic Fighting Group (LIFG), a probable member of al Qaida and a member of the North African Extremist Network. Detainee is a medium to high risk and he is likely to pose a threat to the US and it’s interests and allies,” Herridge reported.

Bin Qumu “is suspected of running camps in eastern Libya where some of the assailants trained, is also a “respected member” of Ansar al-Sharia — one of the Islamist groups identified in State Department email traffic two hours after the attack,” the source told Fox News.

“Thirteen months after Benghazi, what’s striking is the number of  suspects with historic ties to the al-Qaida senior leadership in Pakistan,” Herridge said.

Not surprisingly, “Representatives with the CIA and National Counterterrorism Center declined to comment for this report. The FBI did not respond,” the Fox News article concluded.
