Giving comedian Jon Stewart a history lesson while promoting his new book of collected columns, syndicated columnist and Fox News analyst Charles Krauthammer said re-reading some of his old writings made him “near suicide.”
“I was once a liberal,” he explained.
Fortunately, he got over it enough to win a Pulitzer Prize for columns that champion the conservative cause.
Plugging “Things That Matter,” he took the conservative argument to Stewart’s largely liberal audience with a short primer on the New Deal — which he called one of the victories of liberalism.
The welfare state liberals built, he said, is no longer sustainable, not to mention the explosion of entitlements looming with Obamacare.
“We will simply become insolvent unless we reform,” he said.
Stewart, who earlier accused conservatives of bringing “chaos” and “lethargy” to American politics, acted like he never heard the argument before.
“If it was ever presented in that fashion … I think the conversation we would be having in this country is very different,” he said.
“That’s why you have to buy this book,” Krauthammer said.
