House Oversight Committee Chairman Darrell Issa made serious allegations against the Obama administration Tuesday about the Justice Department‘s refusal to prosecute an American bomb maker at the center of an alleged “grenade-walking” scandal similar to Operation Fast and Furious.

At least one of California bomb maker Jean Baptiste Kingery’s grenades was reportedly found at a Mexican crime scene that killed three Mexican police officers on Oct. 10 – the same Kingery that was released from U.S. custody in 2010 after then-assistant U.S. attorney in Arizona, Emory Hurley, determined the case “lacked jury appeal.”
“These aren’t the only deaths that undoubtedly will come from weapons being allowed to walk and an individual allowed to escape justice for more than 18 months after he was in our hands and released,” Issa told Fox News.
According to earlier reports, Kingery smuggled parts from the U.S. to build grenades and allegedly convert AK-47’s from “semi to fully-automatic weapons” for the cartels, all while being watched by American law enforcement officials.
After agents with the Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives arrested Kingery in 2010, Hurley “referred to the grenades as harmless toys and told the ATF the case “lacked jury appeal,” ATF supervisor Pete Forcelli said, according to Fox News.
In a televised report with William LaJeunesse, Issa accused the Obama administration of allowing Kingery to continue building and exporting grenades, just as guns were allowed into Mexico during Operation Fast and Furious, in an attempt to further its push for a new assault weapons ban.
Issa said:
When you have the attorney general’s own offices being informed about a very dangerous person exporting hand grenades and converting AK-47s into machine guns and they let him continue as part of, not Fast and Furious, but a completely separate failure…I think what you see is, you see an administration that I’m beginning to think really did want to let bad things happen in the hopes they would get an assault weapons ban.
The dots are being connected more and more to these kinds of actions.
Mexican federal police raided Kingery’s Sonora bomb-making factory in 2011, and he is currently being held in prison on “terrorism charges.”
