US Rep. Bill Young dies at 82

U.S. Rep. C. W. “Bill” Young, 82, the Florida Republican who served 22-terms in Congress, died Friday at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

Young, the longest serving Republican in the U.S. Congress, and former chairman of the House Appropriations Committee, had been hospitalized for back problems stemming from a 1970 plane crash.

Young passed away at 6:50 p.m., his chief of staff said and “the cause of death was complications related to a chronic injury,” according to a statement from his family, Reuters reported.

Young had just announced on Oct. 9 that he would not seek reelection at the end of his current term, and he did not participate in Wednesday’s House vote to end the government shutdown and raise the debt limit, Fox News reported.

According to Fox, Young received a phone call last week from former President George W. Bush “thanking him for backing the military.”

Former U.S. Congressman Allen West posted the following on his Facebook page after learning of Young’s passing:

It is with a heavy heart that I learned of the passing of Florida Representative Bill Young. Having served on the House Armed Services Committee I had multiple opportunities to consult with Rep. Young who was Chairman of the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee. He was an incredible teacher and enhanced my knowledge of the appropriations process. Rep. Young was the consummate American Statesman. I know that there is a special place in Heaven for men like Rep. E. Clay Shaw and Rep. Bill Young. Fair winds and following seas Sir.

The following family photo was released Friday morning to the Tampa Bay Times showing Young surrounded by his family last Tuesday.

According to the Times:

The occasion for the photo was the baptism of Young’s 3-month-old grandson, Easton Hunter Young. Family members and Easton’s godparents are in the picture. Easton’s godfather, NASCAR driver Kurt Busch, is on the far left.
