NRA’s LaPierre: Obama’s gun policies driven by ‘junk science’

The National Rifle Association’s Wayne LaPierre said the Obama administration’s gun policies are driven by “junk science” in an article he wrote for Friday’s The Daily Caller.

LaPierre, the NRA’s executive vice president, took issue with an executive order signed by Obama in January that delegated the task of conducting research on gun violence to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In 1997, LaPierre said, Congress specifically banned the CDC from spending money to “advocate or promote gun control.”

“But on the 16th of January, President Barack Obama, with his executive order, put the CDC, with its history of rabid anti-gun ‘research, back in the ‘junk science’ business,” he wrote. “Congress be damned.”

LaPierre also skewered a report issued for the CDC by the National Academy of Sciences, which is at the forefront of the “guns are a disease” movement.

LaPierre wrote:

“Under the heading, “Firearms-Related Violence as a Public Health Issue,” the report demands that “a public health approach should be incorporated into the strategies used to prevent future harm and injuries. Violence, including firearm related violence, has been shown to be contagious. Recognizing this, the academic community has suggested that research examine violence much like is done for contagious diseases.

How twisted is that? Gun ownership treated as a contagious disease.

The central purpose of the proposed “research” should be intensely alarming for all Americans who believe in the Second Amendment.

The single most dangerous “research” among the CDC findings is a demand for collection of personal, private information on all law-abiding firearm owners and our guns. In the vision of the gun control researchers, such data would form the basis of the projected “science.” Throughout the document—no, it’s a manifesto—are references to the creation of this centralized database on the “scope and motivations for gun acquisition ownership and use and how they are distributed across subpopulations.”

Unlawful executive order, CDC gun research and broad data collection on gun owners seem like a full-on assault from Washington.

Dr. Mark Rosenberg, CDC gun guru, applauded Obama’s executive order, claiming that the NRA has been terrorizing scientists, LaPierre said. Conservatives, however, don’t feel their pain and scoff at such rhetoric.

As far as diseases go, progressive liberalism should be high on the list of media-borne pathogens.
