It turns out that nail-biting assassination scene from Showtime’s hit series, “Homeland,” wasn’t all that far-fetched.

Fans of the show will recall how terrorists sent a signal to the fictional vice president’s heart monitoring device causing the vice president to die of a massive heart attack.

During an interview that will air on CBS’ “60 Minutes” this Sunday, former Vice President Dick Cheney admitted his cardiologist took measures with his implanted defibrillator to prevent terrorists from sending him into cardiac arrest, Politico reported.

Cheney’s device was implanted in 2007, but his doctor, Jonathan Reiner, “turned off the device’s wireless function in case a terrorist tried to send his heart a fatal shock,” according to the Associated Press.

According to a segment of the transcript obtained by Politico, Reiner said:

And it seemed to me to be a bad idea for the vice president to have a device that maybe somebody on a rope line or in the next hotel room or downstairs might be able to get into— hack into. And I worried that someone could kill you.

Cheney said he watched the Season Two “Broken Hearts” episode from “Homeland,” and felt it was an “accurate portrayal of what was possible,” Politico reported.

Cheney, now 72, was only 37 when he suffered the first of five heart attacks. He underwent a successful heart transplant in 2012.
