Media says Fla. Obamacare enrollees like ‘leprechauns and unicorns’

health-care-gov-webstieIt’s been two weeks since Florida’s Obamacare online insurance exchange opened, and finding bonafide enrollees is about as easy as finding “leprechauns and unicorns,” reports the Miami Herald.

A blog post by the South Florida newspaper’s senior political writer says the paper has searched high and low for people who have successfully acquired subsidized insurance online, but to no avail.

Will the Floridians who have enrolled for Obamacare please stand up?

Nearly two weeks after the federal government launched the online Health Insurance Marketplace at HealthCare.gov, individuals who have successfully used the choked-up website to enroll for a subsidized health insurance plan have reached a status akin to urban legend:

Everyone has heard of them, but very few people have actually met one.

Administration officials continue to blame the insurance website’s dismal performance on “glitches” resulting from higher-than-expected use, while at the same time failing to disclose the number of Americans who have successfully obtained coverage.

“We don’t have a single confirmed case of a Florida resident successfully completing online enrollment in the the Obamacare exchange,” said Josh Archambault, a senior fellow at the Naples-based Foundation for Government Accountability, a free-market organization.

“This simple fact highlights the federal government’s implementation of this complex law, and could be the tip of the iceberg of future problems to come,” Archambault told Florida Watchdog.

Most agree the administration has had plenty of time and more than adequate resources to resolve website problems before the Oct. 1 launch.

According to the Government Accountability Office, from 2010 through March 2013 almost $394 million was spent building the federally run exchanges – mostly on the development of information technology systems.

Robert Gibbs, President Obama’s former White House press secretary, called for firings.

“This is excruciatingly embarrassing for the White House and the Department of Health and Human Services,” said Gibbs on MSNBC. “This was bungled badly.”

Health center workers, not just the uninsured, are also unable to use Florida’s exchange.

Karelia Stanford, a certified Obamacare insurance counselor in Cutler Bay, told Florida Watchdog due to system errors even trained workers are unable to use healthcare.gov.

“At the moment we have zero applications completed,” said Stanford. “So far the system allows us to create an account, start the application process and then gets frizzy,” she said.
