‘Undocumented, unafraid’: Protesters chain themselves to halt deportation

protesters-immigrationImmigration activists chained themselves outside a detention facility in Elroy, AZ, Monday, to protest the Obama administration’s record on deportation. In addition, protestors demonstrated and blockaded another facility in Phoenix to prevent undocumented immigrants from being deported.

As the protesters blocked the Phoenix facility’s entrance, they chanted, “Undocumented — unafraid,” according to The Washington Times.

The U.S. Senate passed a comprehensive immigration bill in June and is awaiting action in the House. However, most of the anger is directed at the Obama administration’s record annual 400,000 deportations.

Sandy Estrada, 16, demonstrated at the privately owned and operated Elroy facility where her brother has been detained almost a year.

“I’m doing this to show my brother and all the other people inside that we support them, and we will do what it takes to get them out,” she said.

The Washington Times reported:

The activists argue that those being held and deported have often committed no major crimes and should qualify for Mr. Obama’s non-deportation policies. Under those policies, the federal government has said it wants to focus its efforts on immigrants major criminal records or repeat-immigration law violators.

Arizona, with its strict immigration laws, has been a focus of the activists’ ire.

Because Monday was Columbus Day, a legal holiday, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement offices were closed, according to AzCentral.com. Although the government shutdown has not halted deportations, there were none scheduled Monday due to the holiday.
