In a tense interview that sounded like it belonged on MSNBC, Fox News anchor Arthel Neville went after U.S. Rep. Louie Gohmert, R-Texas, saying Republicans have done nothing to resolve the government shutdown.
Quoting a poll that found 60 percent of respondents would “vote to defeat every member of Congress,” Neville asked Gohmert if he thought the Republican Party brand was hurt by the infighting.
“The party’s brand was hurt with TARP,” Gohmert said. “It was hurt with so many things, but especially two-and-a-half years ago, when we made an offer to cut some of the massive overspending, and the president and [U.S. Sen.] Harry Reid, [D-Nev.], said, ‘Nope, it’s our way or the highway.’”
Neville battled back, challenging Gohmert.
“You’re not saying that either, Congressman?” Neville said. “Let’s have some honest talk here.”
Each time Gohmert tried to answer a question, Neville interjected, cutting him off. Gohmert said the House has made offers and voted for numerous compromise solutions.
“I appreciate your passion,” she said. “And of course we’re not suggesting — everybody has great suggestions. We have to mix and match.”
Gohmert disagreed.
“No, you’re wrong there. You’re wrong there!” Gohmert said. “Tell me what the president has suggested. Tell me what Harry Reid has suggested. They have not made one good suggestion, not one, other than total capitulation.”
At the end of the interview, Neville interrupted Gohmert mid-sentence, saying she had to go to a break, and was not trying to avoid the debate.
