Female honor student ordered to remove her NRA T-shirt

An Anaheim Hills, Calif., high school principal ordered an honor student to remove her T-shirt promoting the National Rifle Association — because she said it promoted gun violence.

The shirt, a gift to Canyon High School sophomore Haley Bullwinkle from her father, depicts a buck, the American flag and the silhouette of a hunter, according to local CBS-2.

“They were treating me like I was a criminal,” Bullwinkle said. “I was not allowed to wear that at school because it promoted gun violence.”

When Bullwinkle’s father sent an email asking for an explanation, principal Kimberly Fricker fired back, saying, “The shirt had a gun on it, which is not allowed by school police. It’s protocol to have students change when they’re in violation of the dress code.”

Bullwinkle’s father argued that Canyon High School has a drill team that uses fake rifles, and the school mascot is a Comanche, either of which others may find offensive.

The NRA promotes firearm safety and responsible gun ownership, he said.
