Democratic National Committee Chairwoman and U.S. Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz indicated she will not be following the lead of many of her colleagues by giving their salary to charity during the government shutdown.
The Democrat from Florida admitted after a bit of dodging the subject that she intends to continue accepting her pay, according to Talking Points Memo.
When MSNBC’s Chuck Todd posed the question to her, she was at first a bit evasive, before confirming, “Yes, I’m gonna continue to take my salary.”
But she still managed to find a way to turn it into a noble gesture.
“Because I support everybody who works for the federal government getting a salary, I continue to support reopening the government, making sure that everybody who is doing a job in the federal government can earn their salary and so that’s my position,” Wasserman Schultz said.
Ted Cruz, the junior senator fromTexas who has firm tea party backing, said he will join many other lawmakers in donating his salary to charity for each day the government is shut down during the standoff in Congress over federal funding and President Obama’s health care plan.
“Harry Reid should not force a government shutdown,” he said, according to Fox News. “I hope that Reid stops refusing to negotiate and works with the House to avoid a government shutdown, and, at the same time, prevent the enormous harms that Obamacare is inflicting on the American people.”
