Enough already! 8-year-old suspended for pointing finger

The craziness continues.

Harmony Community School in Central Florida suspended 8-year-old Jordan Bennett for a day for using his finger as a play gun during a game of cops and robbers, according to a television report.

kidgun1002a“He had nothing in his hand. It was a finger gun, a pretend gun,” Jordan’s mother, Bonnnie Bennett, told WFTV in Orlando on Monday.

“He didn’t threaten violence. He didn’t utter words that were inappropriate,” Bennett said. “He made a sound and used his fingers and that was it.”

He pointed his fingers and made a sound like “pow-pow” or “bang-bang” — something literally countless children – mainly boys, God bless ‘em, but girls too – have done since there’ve been cops and robbers.

And that’s something that is now — for reasons known only to people who call themselves “school administrators” — considered to be dangerous. It’s so dangerous, Harmony administrators told WFTV, they have a code of conduct prohibiting students from playing with invisible guns.

That can’t be right.

The Osceola County School District’s code of conduct for 2012-13 does mention gun prohibitions, but restricts them in one section to “hand guns, zip guns, pistols, rifles, shot guns, starter guns, or flare guns” and elsewhere in the code to “cap guns, BB or pellet guns, propellants, paintball guns” — you know, dangerous stuff.

No mention of “invisible guns” anywhere, or even “bang bang.”

Harmony Community School Principal Jon Davis didn’t return a phone call Wednesday, but Bennett said her son would have learned more from the incident if he’d been punished with something other than a suspension.

“If he would have written an essay about why it was inappropriate, what he did, that would have made more of an impact,” she told WFTV.

Here’s a better idea.

How about some member of the education establishment in this country writes an essay trying to justify suspending an 8-year-old kid from school for pointing his finger like a gun during a game of cops and robbers?
