The conservative nonprofit, Citizens United, announced plans this week to produce a documentary film on former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, scheduled for a 2016 release.
The Washington, D.C.-based group is planning to air the yet-to-be-named film on television and DVD, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Citizens United made headlines five years ago, when it won on free-speech grounds the right to produce the documentary, “Hillary: The Movie.” The case, Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission, was eventually decided by the U.S. Supreme Court.
While the first film covered Clinton’s early years, the next one will concentrate on her tenure as secretary of state.
The Hollywood Reporter said:
Like “Hillary: The Movie,” the upcoming film is not expected to be a flattering portrayal of the presumed Democratic candidate for president, though it will primarily explore her life as secretary of state from 2009-13. “Hillary: The Movie,” on the other hand, was released prior to her appointment to the State Department and was about her roles as first lady of Arkansas, first lady of the U.S. and U.S. Senator from New York.
“This is why I went to the Supreme Court,” Citizens United President David Bossie told The Hollywood Reporter. “Now that I won that case, I can do whatever I want with this new movie. I can advertise it on radio and TV, show it on TV whenever I want to — all the things they stopped us from doing with Hillary: The Movie.”
Two previously announced Clinton documentaries — one by NBC and the other by CNN — were shelved, at least in part due to lack of cooperation from the Clinton family. Bossie said he was disappointed, because he would have welcomed the comparisons.
“NBC was casting Diane Lane as Hillary Clinton. Come on. They were doing everything in their power to make Hillary look good, which is their right,” he said. “But ours will not be a puff piece designed to promote a Hillary Clinton presidency.”
