Oh Dio mio. The world has gone crazy. International tempers have reached the boiling point over straight pasta and – no, not corkscrew shapes – gay pasta.
“Una boicotta”/a boycott of Barilla pasta is underway after the Italian company’s Chairman Guido Barilla said he would never use a homosexual family in its brand’s advertising – only “la famiglia tradizionale” would feature in any ads.
“I would never do (a commercial) with a homosexual family, not for lack of respect but because we don’t agree with them. Ours is a classic family where the woman plays a fundamental role,” Barilla told an Italian radio station Wednesday evening, according to NBC News.
“If homosexuals like our pasta and our advertising, they’ll eat our pasta, if they don’t like it then they will not eat it and they will eat another brand,” Barilla added.
“For us the concept of the sacred family remains one of the basic values of the company,” Barilla said of not using a gay family in its ads. “I would not do it but not out of a lack of respect for homosexuals who have the right to do what they want without bothering others … [but] I don’t see things like they do and I think the family that we speak to is a classic family,” the Guardian reported.
Barilla, the world’s most recognized and leading brand of pasta whose home is in the country that hosts the world’s largest Catholic church, has always “used the image of a happy family living in an idealized version of the Italian countryside, with the slogan: ‘Where there’s Barilla, there’s home,’” NBC News reported.
Gay rights activists and supporters around the world were outraged and vowed to never buy Barilla pasta again.
A boycott of Barilla was underway Thursday with Twitter wars appearing under the hashtags #BoicottaBarilla and #BarillaBoycott with a delighted Ronzoni brand gleefully jumping on the Barilla-ban bandwagon.

Barilla US issued an apology for its chairman’s words, and Barilla himself bowed to public pressure and issued a verbal apology via Facebook on Friday.

Barilla Cellentani with Italian Sausage and Barilla Tomato & Basil Sauce
1 box BARILLA Cellentani
4 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil divided
to taste red pepper flakes
2/3 pound Italian sausage casings removed
1/3 cup white wine
1 jar BARILLA Tomato & Basil Sauce
to taste salt
to taste black pepper
½ cup Romano cheese grated
4 leaves basil julienned
Preparation minutes preparation + minutes cooking
1. Gently HEAT 2 tablespoons olive oil and red pepper flakes
2. ADD crumbled Italian sausage and brown well
3. DEGLAZE with white wine and reduce well
4. ADD sauce and 1 cup of water, adjust with salt and pepper and simmer for five minutes
5. Meanwhile, COOK pasta according to directions, drain and toss with the sauce
6. FINISH with cheese, julienned basil and remaining olive oil
