Is this what liberals really want? To destroy the Little Sisters of the Poor?
Fighting in the first class action lawsuit against Obamacare’s contraception mandate, the Catholic religious order dedicated to caring for the elderly poor is facing millions of dollars in fines for refusing to obey the government’s order that it violate clear and longstanding Catholic doctrine by providing employees with free contraception and abortion-inducing drugs, according to Catholic Online.
For normal people, there couldn’t be a clearer question of separation of church and state than a case like this. But to the fanatics of the Obama administration – whose belief in the sanctity of abortion rivals Catholic belief in the transubstantiation – it’s not even close: The Little Sisters of the Poor, an international order of nuns that has been ministering to the elderly for almost 175 years, does not qualify as a “religious employer.”
That means the order will be forced to get an insurance company that provides employees with “contraceptives, sterilization, and abortion-inducing drugs,” according to Catholic Online.
The sisters are represented by the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, one of the leading courtroom opponents of Obamacare that is also representing Hobby Lobby, the Oklahoma City-based retailer challenging the mandates on religious grounds. Hobby Lobby’s objections are based on evangelical Protestant beliefs, but their common cause with the Little Sisters transcends any sectarian differences.
Because this isn’t an argument about abortion. It’s not an argument about contraception. It shouldn’t even be about party politics.
It’s a fight to prevent the Obama administration from succeeding in its obscene assault on the free exercise of religion enshrined in the First Amendment of the Constitution.
Here’s the Little Sisters’ statement on the case from the order’s website. Note there’s no bombast, no threats and no fear. Just the simple logic and steel dignity of women who know what’s right.
“The Little Sisters of the Poor vow to support and follow the teachings of the Catholic Church, including teachings on the inherent value and dignity of every human person. Unfortunately, the federal government has passed a regulation, known as the HHS Contraceptive Mandate, that would force us to disobey Catholic teachings by arranging our health benefit plans to provide no-cost access to abortion-inducing drugs or devices, sterilization, and all FDA-approved contraceptives.
“We believe the government’s attempt to coerce us in this manner is wrong, and that it violates our religious liberty. So, like many other Catholic and religious institutions around the country, we felt the need to seek legal recourse. On September 24, 2013 the Becket Fund filed a lawsuit on our behalf asking federal courts to protect us from being forced to violate our beliefs. By filing this case we are simply asking for the right to continue with our ministry as we’ve always conducted it: caring for the elderly poor, and providing health benefits to our employees, but without coverage for abortion, sterilization, and contraception.
“With God’s help, we are praying for a positive outcome in this case.”
