Florida’s Republican Gov. Rick Scott announced Friday the state’s unemployment rate dropped in August to 7 percent — 0.1 percent dip from May, June and July and 0.2 percent less than the national average.
“Today’s announcement is great news for Florida families as the state’s unemployment rate dropped to 7.0 percent in August,” Scott said in a press release. “Since December 2010, the unemployment rate has dropped 4.1 percentage points and Florida has created 365,500 new private sector jobs. This is evidence that our pro-growth and business friendly policies are working.”
The press release also said:
Since December 2010, Florida’s statewide unemployment rate has dropped 4.1 percentage points, from a rate of 11.1 percent to August’s rate of 7.0 percent. In the same timeframe, the national unemployment rate has dropped 2.0 percentage points, demonstrating Florida’s improving economic climate continues to outpace the national recovery. Florida’s unemployment rate has now declined year-over-year for 34 consecutive months.
Scott participated “in a dedication ceremony for Northrop Grumman’s Center of Excellence, which will create 1,000 jobs,” he announced in another press release Friday.
“With Florida’s incredible workforce, low tax environment and support of manufacturing, we were able to secure a huge victory for Florida families with Northrop Grumman’s centers of excellence, Scott said. “The establishment of the Melbourne facility will create 1,000 new jobs which is a huge victory for area families.”
Scott then looked to a future of increased job growth, saying in the release:
While this is an incredible victory, we aren’t slowing down. This session we’re fighting to create even more jobs and opportunities by cutting $500 million in taxes and fees for Florida families and job creators.
The designation of Northrop Grumman’s Melbourne site as its Center of Excellence for the design of manned aircraft is a tremendous opportunity for the state,” said Secretary of Commerce and president & CEO of Enterprise Florida, Gray Swoope. “Florida is home to one of the nation’s largest defense and homeland security industries and this Center will make that presence even stronger. We are thrilled to have this facility and these new positions, and look forward to the resulting innovation and collaboration.
