Is Hialeah, Fla. part of the United States of America, or not?

This video made me angry. After watching it, you couldn’t be faulted for thinking that Hialeah is not part of the United States, and that the city is not subject to the Constitution and the laws of the state of Florida.

In the video, a group of political gadflies walk into Hialeah City Hall and make a simple public records request while filming themselves, and they are harassed every step of the way, in violation of state law.

I’ve made no effort to determine whether this group is from the left or the right, whether they’re Republicans or Democrats, because it doesn’t matter.

These are not partisan issues; they’re American issues.

The most outrageous part of this video happens when the gadflies leave the building and the police detain them, demanding their identification without any probable cause that a crime has been committed.

Many government officials do everything they can to stonewall and obstruct legal requests for public records, and that’s not going to change until they have to face criminal penalties for doing so.
