The so-called “Million Muslim March” drew a sparse crowd Tuesday – even after changing its original name to the less scary “Million American March Against Fear.”

Reports vary from 21 to 25 protesters, who were outnumbered by police on hand for security. Nearly as many counter-protesters – one that waved an Israeli flag and one that held a giant cross – were visible in the crowd, according to local TV station NBC News4.

The event was organized by the American Muslim Political Action Committee, which
described its members as “patriotic Muslims” demanding new laws to protect their First Amendment rights.

“Many non-Muslim Americans are terrified of Muslims, who are portrayed by Hollywood and the U.S. media as fanatical terrorists,” the group’s website says. “Muslims, too, live in fear – of being dragged off in the night to Guantanamo and tortured, simply for the crime of being Muslim in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

According to its website, the march was meant to “embark from the Rally Against Fear, and onto the March Against Drones.” The group planned to go from the rally on the National Mall around the Capitol building and onto the street between the Supreme Court and congressional offices.

There were no reports on whether the group followed through with that plan.
