New York City mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner appeared on MSNBC’s “The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell,” and the show’s host had one question for his guest: “What is wrong with you?”
No, it wasn’t what you think. O’Donnell couldn’t have cared less about the former congressman’s sexting scandal, saying, “I think your photography is just standard American photography.”
What O’Donnell really wanted to know was, “What is wrong with you that you cannot seem to imagine a life without elective office?”
Things got combative after that, with Weiner denying the suggestion and O’Donnell responding that while Weiner had been immersed in politics since college, other politicians such as George W. Bush were able to find other interests.
Although Weiner had plenty to say in reply, he never answered the original question.
When the air time ran out, O’Donnell invited the candidate to continue the discussion for an online exclusive, allowing Weiner to bloviate pretty much without interruption for a few minutes before the argument started again.
“Bigger guys than you have been trying to knock me down,” Weiner said. “But I’m still here.”
Uh, Weiner may be “here” in a physical sense, but politically speaking, at least for the foreseeable future, he is dead, dead, dead.
The mayoral election is today, Tuesday, Sept. 10.
