Jeb Bush defends his decision to honor Hillary Clinton

Jeb BushFormer Florida Gov. Jeb Bush will award former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton on Tuesday with the 2013 Liberty Medal, saying it’s part of a shared interest in the “importance of civic engagement.”

The potential opponents in the 2016 presidential election come together as Bush presents Clinton with the award at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia to honor her lifelong career in public service and her ongoing advocacy efforts on behalf of women and girls around the globe. Bush is chairman of the National Constitutional Center.

“While Secretary Clinton and I disagree on many issues, we certainly agree on the importance of civic engagement,” Bush said in a statement to the Tampa Bay Times.

“The Board looks forward to the Center’s annual celebration of the vision of freedom, responsibility and equality embodied in the U.S. Constitution,” Bush continued.

The event takes place one day shy of the one year anniversary of the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi that left four Americans dead and critics on the right question Clinton receiving the award because of the controversy centered around that attack.

At the time it was announced that Bush would honor Clinton, talk show host Rush Limbaugh responded by saying, “What in the name of Sam Hill…?”

“This is the kind of stuff that causes my friend I was talking about […] to think the Republican Party has been infiltrated,” Limbaugh added.

And the National Review’s Jim Geraghty questions whether this “pretty much destroys the ‘Jeb Bush 2016’ talk.”

“If Jeb Bush didn’t want to run for the Republican nomination, he could have just said so,” Geraghty wrote.

According to the Christian Science Monitor, the Independence Hall Foundation – an affiliate of the Independence Hall Tea Party Association – plans to hold a coinciding event in Philadelphia Tuesday to promote its alternative choice for the Liberty Medal and host a prayer vigil for those lost in Benghazi.
