“Sit on the sidelines” and “snipe.”
That’s how the president of the United States referred to the deliberations of the Congress of the United States in front of the world press in Sweden on Wednesday, according to a Yahoo News report.
“Sit on the sidelines” and “snipe.”
Sounding more like he was on a campaign stop in Sandusky, Ohio, than Stockholm, and more like he was talking about another dismal failed solar-energy startup than a hopefully successful military strike against a rogue nation, President Obama assured an audience of foreigners that he’ll pretty much do as he damn pleases with the United States armed forces.
This congressional consultation thing about a possible strike on Syria is strictly for the folks back home, he said.
“As commander in chief, I always preserve the right and the responsibility to act on behalf of America’s national security. I do not believe that I was required to take this to Congress,” Obama said, maybe thinking he was talking to a bunch of star-struck 22-year-olds who have nothing to worry about but staying on their parents’ health insurance for another four years.
Then he caught himself.
“But I did not take this to Congress just because it’s an empty exercise; I think it’s important to have Congress’s support on it,” Obama said.
Why it was real important wasn’t real clear, since he just plowed on with how all Congress does is carp, anyway. Basically, he made the whole thing sound like an empty exercise.
“It’s important for us to get out of the habit of just saying ‘well, we’ll let the president kind of stretch the boundaries of his authority as far as he can,’” Obama said.
“Congress will sit on the sidelines, snipe. If it works, the sniping will be a little less. If it doesn’t, a little more. But either way, the American people and their representatives are not fully invested in what are tough choices,” Obama said.
“Not fully invested.”
“Sit on the sidelines, snipe.”
An imperial president, who has spent the three years raging against democracy since his own incompetence and overreach lost his party the House of Representatives, goes on the world stage to tell heads of state and the media that the democratically elected Congress of the United States is a bit player in the drama of Obama.
Cheerleaders, if they have the sense, snipers if they don’t.
Someone should give a president on the eve of his third foreign military engagement the advice Vito Corleone gave Sonny in the first Godfather.
“Never tell anyone outside the Family what you are thinking again,” the Don said.
When Sonny did that in the movie, it helped start a war.
