McCain’s lost it! ‘Allahu Akbar’ is just like saying ‘thank God’

One of the vilest criticisms of John McCain launched by the Obama campaign during the 2008 election was that his advancing years – and potentially declining intellectual faculties – might make him unqualified to be president.

On Fox and Friends Tuesday, though, he might have made their point.

johnmccainDuring an interview with McCain, R-Ariz., interviewer Brian Kilmeade showed a video of Syrian rebels – the guys McCain wants us to supply with weapons – shooting down a Syrian government fighter jet, then exclaiming “Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar,” to celebrate the kill.

“I have a problem helping those people … if they’re screaming that after a hit,” Kilmeade said.

That’s just Kilmeade showing his ignorance, McCain explained.

“Would you have a problem with American Christians saying, ‘thank God, thank God?’” McCain said. “That’s what they’re saying. Come on. Of course they’re Muslims, but they’re moderates.”

Come on yourself, Senator.

It might well be true that “Allahu Akbar” means “thank God.”  It might well be true that it’s as harmless and essentially meaningless as saying “God bless you” when someone sneezes.

It might be true, but it’s also irrelevant.

It isn’t American paranoia or ignorance that associates “Allahu Akbar” with terrorism. And it’s not because Christian Americans have an overwhelming distaste for Muslim piety.

It’s because “Allahu Akbar” is what Islamic terrorists reflexively say when they’ve killed the enemy (as in the Syrian fighter shootdown), or whether they’re about to kill the “enemy,” as in shooting down unsuspecting American soldiers on their own base in Fort Hood, Texas, killing American airmen on a bus in Frankfurt, Germany,  butchering a British soldier on the streets of London, then preaching about it with bloodstained hands in front of a passerby with a cellphone, or, quite literally countless other acts of savagery against the innocent, preferably the unarmed innocent.

And if Westerners know that’s what Islamist terrorist shout when they glory in the blood of their victims, it’s a pretty fair bet the guys who shot down that jet know it, too, and understand the feeling. And McCain wants to give them weapons? Why? So they can shout “Allahu Akbar” when it’s an American fighter they take down? Because they will, and then the senator can give us all another linguistics lesson.

To pretend shocked impatience (“Come on”) that the phrase is something  to American ears other than an incantation of murder is a level of willful blindness or patronizing elitism more expected of the Democratic left than a former standard bearer of the Republican Party  (all you have to do is look at how approvingly the Think Progress or Huffington Post folks are reacting to McCain’s obtuseness to get an idea of how much the libs agree with him in this.)

The Obama campaign was wrong – viciously wrong – about many of the things it attacked McCain for in 2008, but that he no longer had the intellectual wherewithal to be president of the United States might have been something it was right about.

In any case, Republicans won’t have to worry about John McCain running for president again.

Thank God.
