Astonishingly, one of the black teenagers charged with beating to death a World War II veteran allegedly claimed he was buying crack cocaine from the 88-year-old and the transaction turned violent.
According to a report by the Spokesman-Review, 16-year-old Kenan Adams-Kinard claimed the victim, Delbert “Shorty” Belton, was selling crack cocaine outside the Eagles Lodge and shorted them.
Police also have a letter signed with Adams-Kinard’s name that gave a similar account, NBC News reported. The letter said that after buying a “zip of crack cocaine from Shorty,” the teens “proceeded to sock him.”
“I took his wallet and another ounce of crack from his pockets,” the letter said, according to the court document. “He was unconscious so I made sure he was still breathing, and then I took off.”
Police say there is no evidence to support the bizarre claim, Belton’s family has denounced it and the defense lawyer for the other teen accused in the murder even dismissed it, NBC News noted.
“There’s absolutely no truth to that whatsoever,” Belton’s nephew Ian Day told the Spokesman-Review. “By saying these things they’ve brought darkness upon themselves.”
Making matters worse, Adams-Kinard’s father, Steven Kinard, who admits to a history of cocaine addiction, stands by his son’s claim, saying Belton was well known in the drug dealing community, according to the Spokesman-Review.
“He poisoned the country and poisoned our kids,” Steven Kinard said.
In the end, to concoct a self-serving story that makes the victim, who was shot in the Battle of Okinawa, seem less sympathetic shows the teenager takes no responsibility for his actions and has little remorse.
And it’s not flying with the public, as the response on Twitter documented by Twitchy indicates:
This will do nothing to quiet the outrage. Suspect in #DelbertBelton murder says teens were trying to buy crack from Shorty. #kxly

I wonder if it’s more likely an 88 year old war vet was selling crack or a murderer is trying to smear a victim to minimize what he did…
