The Associated Press reporters who won a Pulitzer last year for smearing New York City’s Police Department for spying on terrorists before they strike are now aiming for the bestseller lists.
And judging by the AP’s own breathless, innuendo-laden description of the book moving on the wire today, it’s another hit job on the NYPD – and by extension a hit job on every other effective anti-terrorism operation in the country today.
The NYPD has apparently been guilty of doing obvious police work, such as spending time in places where Islamist terrorists are known to congregate (here’s a hint, in English they’re called “mosques”), asking non-terrorists who oversee such mosques to keep an eye on suspected terrorists who are members (the AP calls them “informants”), and – get this – actually getting a federal judge to sign off on the whole thing.
The book is called “Enemies Within: Inside the NYPD’s Secret Spying Unit and bin Laden’s Final Plot Against America,” but nothing it’s supposed to be exposing the NYPD for doing sounds particularly unusual or, with a judge’s OK, even close to illegal.
And here’s the really crazy part: There hasn’t been a successful terrorist attack in New York City since 9/11.
So obviously, the NYPD is doing something wrong.
The AP account today describing the NYPD’s actions is probably technically accurate, but it’s written in language so loaded it might have come from the ACLU or the New York Times editorial page. Here’s the lead:
“The New York Police Department has secretly labeled entire mosques as terrorism organizations, a designation that allows police to use informants to record sermons and spy on imams, often without specific evidence of criminal wrongdoing.”
Your average American, uneducated in matters of liberal handwringing and knee-jerk grievance-mongering might immediately think, “… and what do they call that thing Miley Cyrus was doing the other night?”
But to the AP, that sentence is all that’s needed to declare the dark night of fascism has fallen over the land.
The NYPD’s actions are so grievously wrong, AP declares, that the FBI has declined to sully its reputation by imitating them.
The FBI? You mean the same FBI whose own director admitted it bungled its investigation of Boston Marathon bomber Tamerlan Tsarnaev long before he blew up the finish line on Patriots’ Day? That FBI?
Or the FBI that ignored its own agent’s warnings in 2001 about a Muslim man in Minnesota who wanted to learn how fly commercial jetliners without learning how to take off or land them? That agent suspected there might be an al-Qaeda plot afoot to hijack commercial airliners and fly them into American skyscrapers, the bigot.
When we start relying on Eric Holder’s FBI to give lessons on fighting terrorism, we better get used to them being in Arabic.
Last year when the reporters who wrote “Enemies Within” won that Pulitzer, a New York Post editorial responded succinctly, with a summary that, based on the AP summary today, would cover the book in spades:
“Let the AP toast an ill-gotten prize that actually says more about mainstream journalism than about the NYPD.”
Hear, hear.
