Daily News to Christie: ‘Who you calling an idiot, fatso!’

I’m not a fan of the Obama-hugging New Jersey governor, Chris Christie. So when I saw this morning’s cover of the New York Daily News, I laughed so hard, I spit coffee all over my keyboard.

Daily News reporter Manish Mehta and the rest of the sports-covering media rightfully went after New York Jets coach Rex Ryan in Saturday’s post-game press conference for playing quarterback Mark Sanchez in a meaningless pre-season game behind a back-up offensive line late in the game. Sanchez got hit so hard, he injured his shoulder, and the Jets’ first-round draft pick, rookie Geno Smith, doesn’t look ready for prime time yet.

Christie is friends with Ryan. So instead of admitting Ryan made a mistake, the governor went after Mehta on the WFAN radio show, “Boomer and Carton,” saying:

“Idiot. The guy’s a complete idiot. Self-consumed, underpaid, reporter. The only reason he’s empowered is we’re spending all this time this morning talking about Manish Mehta who, by the way, I couldn’t pick out of a police lineup.”

A wannabe leader of the free world calling a sports writer names on the radio. How presidential.

But New York City is a tough town, and the Daily News hit back at Christie with everything but the kitchen sink.

“Like peanut butter and jelly, these fat men stick together,” the Daily News’ Jets reporter, Seth Walder, wrote in an article titled, “Governor Chris Christie calls Daily News reporter Manish Mehta ‘idiot’ on radio show.”

Daily News columnist Mike Lupica also joined the fray.

“Who knows, maybe there is a stronger bond than we knew of between Christie and Ryan because they both have undergone lap-band surgery the past couple of years, maybe it’s some kind of Lap-Band of Brothers deal,” Lupica wrote.

And that front page. Ha, that front page.
