California students no longer have to kneel before their principal

For a short while, the principal at a California elementary school was treated like royalty — or maybe a deity — until parents got a whiff of what was going on.

Students at a San Bernardino County elementary school will no longer have to drop to one knee before being dismissed for classes by the principal or another administrator, according to CBS Los Angeles, KCAL-9.

Principal Dana Carter began the “kneeling prior to dismissal” policy at Calimesa Elementary School generally before classes began or immediately after recess. The policy was described in a flyer that circulated among parents as “a positive way to enforce safety” among students.

The report noted:

Yucaipa Calimesa Unified School District Superintendent Cali Binks told KCAL9 the policy – which was described as “positive behavior intervention” – will no longer be enforced at Calimesa Elementary after several parents spoke out against the practice.

flyerPhone calls went out Tuesday notifying parents of the superintendent’s decision. For one unidentified mother, it didn’t come a moment too soon, and described what her 7-year-old daughter had to go through.

“She says that she has to drop down on one knee with her hands at her side, wait for the principal to come out, lift his arms and tell them to go to class,” said the mom.

“I feel that the principal wants to be like a king, and we don’t have kings in America,” she added.

Carter will schedule a future meeting with parents to plan different safety options on campus according to district officials. Maybe they’ll only have to make the sign of the cross while he sprinkles them with holy water.
