MSNBC host Craig Melvin set his sights Saturday afternoon on a controversy featuring a national department store chain, a group of cute kids and their choice of musical genre, and found that it’s all “much ado about nothing.”
In yet another example of the nation’s hypersensitivity when it comes to race, a few people are up in arms over a lively K-Mart back-to-school commercial featuring a group of adorable adolescents calling themselves Da Rich Kidzz.
The brouhaha centers on the fact that the group uses rap to peddle what K-Mart has to offer, which some feel amounts to racial stereotyping.
The moment the ad hit the TV screens, twerps started tweeting their ire, and Melvin read a few of them. who accused Kmart of “racially profiling” black kids. They “don’t just rap and dance,” and called K-Mart “sneaky” for adding a “token white girl, just to even things out.”
Still another dubbed the commercial “belittling and deplorable.” Melvin even said some of his MSNBC coworkers were equally troubled by the ad before he threw the issue out to his panel.
“Everybody needs to calm down,” said Zerlina Maxwell. “This commercial is cute. They’re rapping about school, this is a good thing right?” She added, “If hoodies and rapping makes you think we’re stereotyping black people, you either haven’t been paying attention for the past 20 year, because consumers of hip hop are a majority white. And also, if a hoodie means thug to you, then you might have to reflect back on why that is.”
The panel’s token conservative, Amy Holmes from The Blaze, agreed and asked, “Why are we messing it up for these kids? They made a fantastic video. They’re obviously talented, adorable. Getting a national campaign ad is a huge success and a huge accomplishment, and we should be applauding these kids. They’re rapping about how much they love school.”
Sometimes a commercial is just a commercial, just like sometimes a rodeo clown is just a rodeo clown. And usually when people disagree with the president, they’re just disagreeing with the president. Chill out.
