It probably seemed like a good idea to hide almost a half-million dollars’ worth of pot in a gun safe – until the safe got delivered to the wrong address.
A Shelby County, Ohio, man got an unexpected bonus of marijuana bricks worth about $425,000 worth of marijuana when he had a new gun safe delivered to his home, according to an ABC Radio News report.
“I’ve been in law enforcement for 47 years and I’ve never seen anything like this,” Sheriff John Lenhart told WLS radio. “It’s quite effective if you think about it: wrapped airtight to withstand high temperatures. Drug-sniffing dogs probably couldn’t smell it.”
The safes – big enough to accommodate 24 long rifles and a dozen shotguns — are manufactured in Nogales, Mexico, and packaged for shipping by local inmates, according to WLS.
So, jail inmates in Mexico are shipping secure packages north to someone in the United States. Someone who needs to keep lots of guns around the house.
What could go wrong?
“Someplace between Mexico and the warehouse in Northern Ohio, the drugs got mixed up and put in the wrong safe and got delivered to the wrong person,” Lenhart said.
No charges are expected against the man who received the safe, WLS reported.
But that’s not the end of the story. If he got the wrong safe, another safe – an empty one – also got delivered to the wrong person. Who is probably very, very angry.
WLS said police are looking for the driver of the Conway truck that was contracted to transport a shipment of about 30 safes to the Ohio warehouse that eventually delivered the pot-filled container.
Oddly enough, they haven’t been able to find him.
“Not only are we looking for him,” Lenhart said, “but the bad guys are, too.”
So, a good plan gets screwed up by lousy delivery.
The big problem now — for somebody — is execution.
