NC college won’t cave to illegals’ equal tuition demands

Putting a conservative twist on a typical liberal report out of North Carolina, compliments to Wake Technical Community College for not caving in to the demands of illegal immigrants wanting to pay the in-state tuition cost.

The sense of entitlement from these “undocumented students” and the sympathetic bias of the local ABC affiliate are not unusual, but how Wake Tech handled these students protesting having to pay the much higher, out-of- state tuition rate is.

Five illegal immigrant students were arrested and charged with “second-degree trespassing” for holding a protest on the campus “demanding equal tuition rights,” forcing the other students to have to move their protest out near the highway, WTVD-TV reported.

“Wake Tech officials said the group didn’t file the proper paperwork to protest at the college,” and after repeated warnings to leave the campus, police were called in and the arrests were made.

In addition, the college instituted a new policy last spring “stating that undocumented students couldn’t register for classes until one week after everyone else,” the report said.

So, besides protesting the tuition rates, the “undocumented students” were complaining that some classes they wanted were already filled by the time they could register.

“I couldn’t take any math or physics classes because they said it was already a week after, and they said I wasn’t going to be able to catch up,” undocumented student Jose Rico complained to the news station.

According to the report:

Rico is one of the students who was arrested. He has been in community college for five years, lived in North Carolina for 10, and graduated from a North Carolina high school with a 3.9 GPA. Still, Rico is undocumented and forced to pay out-of-state tuition.

“It’s almost $4,000 per semester. So I was able to go for like a year and a half. And I have to be taking one class per semester at a time, so it’s been a long process for me to go to the next step,” Rico said.

Wake Tech President Dr. Stephen Scott didn’t sound very sympathetic as he told the station the college is seeing “record enrollment” and could not “guarantee classes” to undocumented students.

“They can register in a more timely fashion, but still the number of people wanting our classes far exceeds our ability to deliver our resources,” Scott stated.
