CNN investigates if Ted Cruz is eligible to run for president

All of a sudden, CNN is interested in whether a candidate meets the eligibility requirements to be president of the United States.

Not the sitting president, of course, but that of a potential challenger to replace him — U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas.

As speculation builds on whether Cruz will run to be the Republican nominee for president in 2016, CNN points out that the “natural-born citizen” question is dogging him as part of an investigation the network conducted into his eligibility.

Early indications suggest that liberals are more concerned with Cruz than any other potential GOP candidate. The contempt they have for his sharp intellect and impressive Ivy League education is often on full display for all to see.

Host Wolf Blitzer opens by telling viewers that Cruz has “taken the Senate by storm stirring up controversy and ruffling feathers on both sides of the aisle” and points out that he is a tea party favorite that is generating “lots of buzz about the 2016 race for the White House.”

“However, the question isn’t only will he run, but can he run under the U.S. Constitution?” Blitzer then asked.

Correspondent Athena Jones responded:

“The big question here is whether Ted Cruz is a natural-born citizen.

“I spoke with several constitutional law experts about this today. And all of them believe that Cruz is. But it’s important to know the Constitution doesn’t define who is a natural-born citizen. And those are the only people eligible to run for president. Also I should add the Supreme Court has never ruled on this issue.”

The media is free from the condemnation that faced a reporter who might have asked the same question in 2008 or 2012 and Cruz is certain to hear it raised often in the days ahead.
