A day after U.S. District Court Judge Shira Scheindlin’s ruled that New York’s “stop-and-frisk” policy was unconstitutional, conservative radio host Laura Ingraham warned Tuesday that the decision could “demonize” police on the streets.
In her ruling, Scheindlin said the police department used a “policy of indirect racial profiling” that increased the number of stops in minority communities and routinely stopped “blacks and Hispanics who would not have been stopped if they were white,” according to The New York Times.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg said the city would appeal the decision.
In a Tuesday segment of “Fox & Friends,” Ingraham said there was nothing in the policy that violated the Fourth Amendment to the Constitution as it pertained to search and seizure. She warned that the ruling will make police less thorough in their policing and could make them “demonized” in the community.
Host Gretchen Carlson said residents of the communities most directly involved are supportive of the policy as a way to reduce crime in their neighborhoods.
Ingraham agreed, adding:
“The judge should move into Bed-Stuy or up in some of the difficult areas of Staten Island where – this has saved lives, this policy.
“This is typical evolving standards of the Constitution jurisprudence that conservatives have been talking about for decades. Where a judge substitutes her on view of the world, her own utopian view of how the world should be for the way the real life is — for the people who are trying to get by, not get killed, not get robbed, not get raped on the streets of New York.”
