House conservatives to offer Obamacare alternative

A caucus of House conservatives announced it will soon be revealing a new health care reform package meant to replace the Affordable Care Act.

The Republican Study Committee Chairman, Rep. Steve Scalise, R-La., said Friday that the group’s members will-co-sponsor the bill sometime after the August recess, according to The Hill.

“Chairman Scalise and the RSC Health Care Working Group are drafting legislation to repeal ObamaCare and replace it with a conservative alternative that fixes the problems in our healthcare system without the harmful taxes and mandates in the President’s law,” Stephen Bell said in a statement to The Hill. “The timetable for rollout is slated for this fall.”

The Hill noted:

House Republicans have held 40 votes to repeal, defund or dismantle the Affordable Care Act but have struggled to coalesce around an alternative plan.

Individual GOP members have introduced their own replacement plans — a new measure from Rep. Paul Broun (R-Ga.) would repeal ObamaCare and enact premium-assisted Medicare, for example — but none have seen much traction in the GOP conference.

The RSC measure will reportedly include a provision to cover individuals with pre-existing conditions.

When the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act was under consideration in 2009, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich proposed an alternative to the bureaucracy-laden legislation that would come to be known as Obamacare.

That plan included stepped-up fraud protection, tax incentives for policy holders, tort reform and a move to an electronic recordkeeping system. In the area of fraud protection alone, in an age when financial institutions routinely detect and stop suspicious transactions as small as $1, the government continues to pay many billions each year in fraudulent transactions.

The RSC’s health care bill should get a substantial boost of support by virtue of its 173-member list.
