Associated Press caught with bias in full view

Obama gulf gaffeThe Associated Press got caught with its partisanship showing when it added a few words to a remark President Barack Obama said during his Tuesday appearance on “The Tonight Show” to correct a gaffe.

In response to host Jay Leno’s question about modernizing infrastructure, the president incorrectly placed Atlantic Ocean ports in the Gulf of Mexico with the following:

“If we don’t deepen our ports all along the gulf — places like Charleston, South Carolina or Savannah, Georgia, or Jacksonville Florida — those ships are going to go someplace else.”

The AP, however, quoted the president as saying the following:

“If we don’t deepen our ports all along the Gulf – (and in) places like Charleston, S.C., or Savannah, Ga., or Jacksonville, Fla. – if we don’t do that, these ships are going to go someplace else and we’ll lose jobs.”

The Associated Press always prides itself on accuracy. But in this case, it actually added words to a direct quote that weren’t said to make sense of the president’s statement. Its readers quickly noticed this and cried foul. The following day, AP issued a correction, which was picked up by “The Weekly Standard’s” Jeryl Bier.

AP’s correction reads, in part, as follows:

“SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) – In an Aug. 7 story on President Barack Obama’s comments on the need to deepen U.S. harbors, The Associated Press wrongly inserted an interpretive phrase in parentheses into a quote by Obama:”

Bier exhibited a fine sense of humor when he tweeted:

But maybe the correction is in need of a correction. Noted one:
