Support explodes for online petition to defund Obamacare

Sens Lee and CruzA week after Republican Sens. Ted Cruz and Mike Lee started a petition to garner support for defunding Obamacare, people are responding – in astounding numbers.

An online petition at DontFundIt.com listed over 25,000 signatures when BizPac Review posted a report on July 27, but the total has quickly risen to over 175,000.

“This is the last opportunity we’re going to have to stop Obamacare before the Jan. 1 deadline so we have to refuse to fund it now,” Lee is quoted as saying on the website.

In an email touting the effort’s success, the Senate Conservatives Fund quoted Chris Jacobs, senior policy analyst at the Heritage Foundation, who wrote a recent paper explaining why defunding Obamacare is the next best option to full repeal:

“The list of Obamacare’s failures grows by the day. It is not that portions of the law are unworkable — the entire law is unworkable. Absent the law’s complete repeal, only full defunding would ensure that the American people are not subjected to any of these destructive policies. Congress can do its part in remedying these failures by using its all-important “power of the purse” to set a very clear line in the sand: not one single dime to fund Obamacare.”

Thirteen senators have signed the letter pledging to oppose Obamacare funding:

Mike Lee, R-Utah             David Vitter, R-La.

Ted Cruz, R-Texas           Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa

Rand Paul, R-Ky.             Jeff Chiesa, R-N.J.

Marco Rubio, R-Fla.        John Thune, R-S.D.

Deb Fischer, R-Neb.        Mike Enzi, R-Wyo.

Jim Risch, R-Idaho          Mike Crapo, R-Idaho

Jim Inhofe, R-Okla.

The website, DontFundIt.com, also notes which senators – and candidates who hope to replace them – have pledged not to fund Obamacare in 2014.

DontFundIt.com is affiliated with the Senate Conservatives Fund, which describes itself as a “grassroots organization dedicated to electing strong conservative leaders to the United States Senate.” It is not affiliated with the Republican Party or any of its campaign committees, and it says it will not support liberal Republicans.
