Britain legalized gay marriages in July, after Queen Elizabeth II affixed her royal seal of approval. And now it starts. Two weeks later, a gay couple is testing that law beyond the freedoms I’m sure it was intended to provide.
Barrie Drewitt-Barlow and his partner, Tony, are filing a lawsuit to force the Church of England to unite the man and man in holy matrimony because, in the words of half of the couple, “I am still not getting what I want,” according to Christian.org.
The Christian Institute noted that although Parliament legalized gay marriage on July 16, “it included measures to protect churches from being forced to perform same-sex weddings.”
That is, of course, as it should be. It’s unfair to ask religious institutions to act against the tenets of their faith. In America, that principle is guaranteed under the First Amendment to the Constitution — at least so far.
Religious dogma be damned.
“The only way forward for us now is to make a challenge in the courts against the church,” Drewitt-Barlow said.
Well, no. That’s not the only way forward. They can also accept their now-legal civil union and live happily ever after until divorce do they part.
“It is a shame that we are forced to take Christians into a court to get them to recognize us,” Drewitt-Barlow said. “It upsets me because I want it so much – a big lavish ceremony, the whole works, I just don’t think it is going to happen straight away.”
“As much as people are saying this is a good thing, I am still not getting what I want,” he added.
Life is full of disappointment for heterosexuals, too. My advice is get used to it.
