President Obama and the first family will be heading off to Martha’s Vineyard on Aug. 10 for an eight-day vacation, and it appears they will be scaling back this year.
In past years, the Obamas rented the $21 million Blue Heron Farm, but it is no longer available. This trip will be spent at the $7.6 million resort home of Chicago corporate financier David Schulte, according to the Washington Examiner. The home sits on 9.5 acres on the southern edge of the island in the town of Chilmark.
The 5,000-square-foot home was renovated 10 years ago, and Sundberg Kennedy Ly-Au Young Architects has already noted the presidential family visit on its website.
Obama will be contributing to the local economy, the Washington Examiner reported:
While the president typically keeps to himself and carries with him only a handful of staffers to Martha’s Vineyard, security will be tight. As in the past, the Wesley Hotel in Oak Bluffs will house security and communications officials. The owner told the Vineyard Gazette that the Secret Service has booked 70 rooms and another five have been reserved for the Transportation Security Agency. Rates at the hotel run from $225-$345.
Preparations are underway to install electrical and communication systems for the president’s use. Additional cell phone towers have been installed, and two Verizon “Cell on Wheels” mobile sites, or “COWs,” are expected, according to the Vineyard Gazzette.
