This isn’t your grandfather’s NASCAR, as race fans will find out this weekend while attending the Brickyard 400 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
A pro-marijuana legalization ad will play dozens of times on a Jumbotron by the entrance gate to the race, marking the first time in history this has happened at a major sporting event, according to USA Today.
Asking if this is “the new beer,” the ad compares marijuana to alcohol and points out that marijuana use results in “no calories,” “no hangovers,” and “no violence.”
The Marijuana Policy Project, the nation’s largest pro-marijuana legalization advocacy group, is behind the ad that includes the tagline: “Less harmful than alcohol, and time to treat it that way.”
“We think it’s critical that the public recognize that marijuana is objectively less harmful than alcohol,” spokesperson Mason Tvert said.
NASCAR has no affiliation with the advertiser, USA Today reported, and the ad will not appear anywhere on track property. NASCAR declined to comment.
