Top Democrat Waxman agrees with verdict, no evidence race involved

In a statement that flies in the face of the political narrative activists have endeavored long and hard to establish, and one he may soon regret, Rep. Henry Waxman, D-Calif., said “it seems unlikely” Attorney General Eric Holder would file civil rights charges against George Zimmerman.

Waxman questioned whether race was even involved in the case on the eve of nationwide protests scheduled to call on Holder’s Justice Department to pursue charges against Zimmerman, who was acquitted in the death of Trayvon Martin.

“I haven’t heard that they could show that there was anything with regard to race involved,” Waxman said during an interview on C-SPAN’s Newsmakers program, according to The Hill.

The ranking member of the Energy and Commerce Committee summed up the altercation: “There was a boy and this fellow Zimmerman thought he was up to no good and they got into a fight.”

“Maybe he decided [Trayvon] was doing something wrong because he was African American, but there was no clear evidence that was the supposition. It seems unlikely that they could make a case.”

The 38 year incumbent seen as one of the most influential liberal members of Congress appeared to agree with the jury’s decision when he said, “I can see how a jury trying to reach a verdict beyond a reasonable doubt for guilt could have a reasonable doubt and come to the conclusion they reached.”

Coming from the left side of the aisle, where dissension is just not tolerated, Waxman may soon find himself under considerable fire, but with black voters only representing 2.8 percent of his district, it should have little impact at the polls.
