Gov. Scott defends gun law to pro-Trayvon ‘occupiers’

As reported earlier in the week, activists looking to exploit George Zimmerman’s acquittal in the death of Trayvon Martin now “occupy” Gov. Rick Scott‘s office in Tallahassee, Florida. The group set up shop Tuesday, refusing to leave until Scott agreed to meet with them and hear their concerns.

They are demanding that Scott call a special session of the Florida legislature to address “stand your ground vigilantism, racial profiling and a war on youth that.. funnels us out of schools and into jails,” as noted on the web site of one group involved.

The politically motivated activists got part of what they wanted when Gov. Scott sat down with them Thursday night — a lesson to be learned if you really, really want the governor’s ear.

The video here captures the reaction of the protestors as they received word that Gov. Scott would meet with them.

Ironically, as a picture posted on Twitter illustrated, while those pulling down the grunge duty of sleeping overnight on hard office floors are primarily black, the folks sitting down with Scott to discuss racial grievances where mostly white — a common occurrence on the left.

In a statement released after the meeting, Scott said:

Tonight, the protestors again asked that I call a special session of the Legislature to repeal Florida’s Stand Your Ground law. I told them that I agree with the Task Force on Citizen Safety and Protection, which concurred with the law. I also reminded them of their right to share their views with their state legislators and let them know their opinions on the law.

Scott also told the political activists that he spoke with Trayvon Martin’s mother earlier in the evening and that he planned to call for a Statewide Day of Prayer for Unity in Florida this Sunday, July 21st.

In not having their ransom demands met precisely as detailed, and certainly feeling confident further appeasement can be expected, the group hunkered down for the long haul in their “occupation.”

The “sit-in” has not garnered much publicity, although CNN was present earlier in the day Thursday and Lee Stranahan, a writer from Breitbart.com, has been around from the beginning.

As Stranahan noted, the group is being led by a half dozen or so experienced leaders — see professional agitators — and the ranks are beginning to swell.

Predictably, protest supporters took to Twitter to voice their dissatisfaction with Scott after the meeting.
