Legal experts of all stripes have stressed that the trial of George Zimmerman, who was charged with second-degree murder in the shooting death of 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, was motivated by politics and race.
And there are few signs of this changing anytime soon.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., suggested on Sunday that Attorney General Eric Holder’s very politicized Department of Justice will be reviewing federal charges against Zimmerman, who was acquitted of murder and manslaughter late Saturday in the shooting death of Trayvon Martin.
During an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Reid said: “I think the Justice Department is going to take a look at this. This isn’t over with and I think that’s good,” The Hill reported.
Reid did say that he accepted the verdict, pointing out that he is a trial lawyer — go figure — saying, “I don’t always agree with what the jury does, that’s the system and I support the system.”
Right on cue, a few hours after Reid spoke, a spokesperson for the Justice Department said Sunday that federal prosecutors are pressing forward with their investigation into the case:
As the Department first acknowledged last year, we have an open investigation into the death of Trayvon Martin. The Department of Justice’s Criminal Section of the Civil Rights Division, the United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation continue to evaluate the evidence generated during the federal investigation, as well as the evidence and testimony from the state trial.
Experienced federal prosecutors will determine whether the evidence reveals a prosecutable violation of any of the limited federal criminal civil rights statutes within our jurisdiction, and whether federal prosecution is appropriate in accordance with the Department’s policy governing successive federal prosecution following a state trial.
